Employee Spotlight – James McQuillan

FWF’s employee spotlight highlights James McQuillan, a valued team member since 2020. In his position as a Senior Logistics Consultant, McQuillan provides elite service to our trusted partners with his tenacious work ethic and positive attitude. We had the opportunity to learn more about his experience and the journey that led him to FWF.

How did you get to where you are today?

I grew up in Saint Charles, Illinois, 45 minutes west of Chicago. I attended the University of Illinois where I majored in Economics. During that period, I also spent time in the Czech Republic studying international business. Post-graduation, I decided to move up to Grand Rapids to be close to my sister and enjoy the summer in northern Michigan.

What year were you hired at FWF?

I was hired as a Carrier Procurement Representative in November 2020. In February 2021, I transitioned into a Logistics Consultant role and later earned a promotion to my current position as a Senior Logistics Consultant.

What brought you to FWF?

After college, I was applying to a wide range of jobs. After I applied to FWF, I had an initial interview with Josh Brawley, COO at FWF. Immediately, I knew the company was a perfect fit for me. The culture was noticeable from the start, with a management team that promotes both professional and personal growth.

Three words to best describe FWF:

  • Engaging
  • Supportive
  • Rewarding

What FWF company value is most important to you and why?

Leadership.

For me, leadership is the company value that resonates with me the most. We have an outstanding leadership team that continues to help every team member grow. During my time with FWF, I have been taught several leadership qualities that I have been encouraged to demonstrate both in and out of the office.

What is your favorite part of your job?

My favorite part of my job would be working with a big team. I enjoy getting to know my co-workers and I wanted to make sure wherever I work values this as well. FWF does a great job of bringing employees together. Through events and culture-focused initiatives, I have been able to meet some really great people. Golfing is a big part of my life and I have been able to find a group of people at FWF that share this passion. Through something we share in common, we now go golfing nearly every weekend during the warmer months.

What is your motto or personal mantra?

“The grass is green where you water it.”

What advice would you give to someone interested in beginning their career in logistics and transportation?

The ability to maintain focus on the big picture and brush off short-term setbacks is paramount in our world. If you are the type of person that gets excited with an opportunity to showcase your problem-solving skills, this is the perfect industry for you. Logistics and transportation is a great industry to dip your toes in the professional waters and polish your communication, organization, and multitasking skills.
